Recent Solar Storms Dumped Huge Amounts of Energy

Hey Space Placers!

Remember the recent solar storms we all were in awe over? Well, the amount of energy that these solar storms dumped into our planet's atmosphere was enough to power each and every single home in New York City for two years!

That by the way, comes out to be 26 BILLION kilowatt hours (kWH) of energy. Unfortunately there is no way for us to harness this energy because it is deposited in the top most layers of the atmosphere and is so diffuse.

This was the biggest dose of energy received by the upper atmosphere from a solar storm since 2005 and much more activity is expected as the solar maximum is predicted for 2013.
