Did you see the segment on asteroids last night on CBS '60 Minutes'?
This was an excellent segment and I recommend you watch it as the good folks from NASA's Near Earth Objects (NEO) describe the threat we face from space rocks and comets. There is also comment from the B612 Foundation that is trying to use private funding to speed up the detection process.
