New research just published reveals that perhaps we have had it wrong as to how our galaxy, the Milky Way, is shaped. The biggest change is that perhaps the galaxy has only two main spiral arms instead of the generally held four that has been the standard model.

More research will be forthcoming and you can read all about it here.

The Milky Way is  currently visible around midnight with August being  the best month for seeing it in our Northern Hemisphere skies.
