NASA has awarded a contract to Lockheed Martin to build a nuclear rocket propulsion spacecraft. This has been a Holy Grail for space exploration dating back to the '60's. Such a capability would drastically reduce flight time to Mars and provide significant capabilities for lunar missions.

You know humanity is serious about returning to, and staying on, the Moon, when serious research is being done about - ahem - keeping your underwear clean!

In Apollo Moon missions it was a far different issue and solution as each astronaut had their own individual space suit and "undies". "1 and 2" occurrences were handled in crude but effective means.

But with Moon missions lasting far longer and actual lunar outposts planned for long term occupation, we have to rethink underwear and handling of our most basic biological process.

Read this fascinating article on lunar undies.
