THE LATEST ON THE GALAXY YOU LIVE IN

Hey Space Placers!

The latest on our home galaxy, the Milky Way.

And here is a artist's rendering of our galaxy:

Artist’s concept of our Milky Way galaxy. See our sun’s orbit, in yellow, between the galaxy’s center and its outer edge? In its 3rd data release, Gaia focused in the direction opposite the galaxy’s center, toward its nearest outer edge. Image via NASA/ JPL-Caltech/ R. Hurt/ Wikimedia Commons via EarthSky.org

The summer Milky Way is visible in the NW as it gets dark as is the less prominent Winter Milky Way. We also found out that we are about 2,000+ light years closer to the galaxy's center than previously thought - about 25,000 light years distant.

We'll learn more about our home galaxy and our place in it as more discoveries are made.
